Make a deal with the devil and you might get what you want, but will it be what you need?
Jennifer Sylvester wants one thing, and that one thing is NOT to be Tennessee’s reigning Banana Cake Queen. Ever the perpetual good girl and obedient daughter, Jennifer is buckling under the weight of her social media celebrity, her mother’s ambitions, and her father’s puritanical mandates. Jennifer is officially desperate.
And desperate times call for Cletus Winston.
Cletus Winston is a puzzle wrapped in a mystery covered in conundrum sauce, and now he’s in a pickle. Despite being convinced of his own omniscience, extortion by the exalted Banana Cake Queen of Green Valley has taken him completely by surprise. So… what’s a maniacal mastermind to do?
Likely, the last thing you expect.
‘Beard Science’ is the third book in the Winston Brothers series, is a full-length romantic comedy novel, and can be read as a standalone.
Cletus…We met him in Beauty and the Mustache. We got to know him a little better in Truth or Beard and in Grin and Beard It. He was the odd brother. The one who was maniacally smart and devious. He’s the master of masks, and Jennifer Sylvester is the only one who really knows it outside of the Winston family. Oddly enough we know about her from those stories as well. She seemed almost simple, definitely odd, and though, not someone I’d forget (remember she’s odd) she’s not someone that we know. And in this we get to know both Cletus and Jennifer a lot better.
These two characters are by far and away some of my favourites. They are a lot more alike than even they give themselves credit for. They gather information about people in similar ways but they do it for different reasons. One is simply to understand the other is for future use. I love that Cletus learns from Jennifer and she learns from him as well. Her lessons are obvious and painful for some of those around her. Whereas his, are soul changing, but only those who know him, see those changes. Of course you get the cast of characters. There’s Ashley and Drew from Beauty and the Mustache, and Duane and Jess from Truth or Beard, and Jethro and Sienna from Grin and Beard It, then Beau, Billy, and Roscoe. You get some of Green Valley’s finest citizens in Sheriff James, Jackson James, Kyp Sylvester, and a few of the Iron Wraiths. There are a few new faces as well, one of which is Shelley Sullivan, Quinn’s sister. We’ve read her before in Neanderthal Seeks Human and Neanderthal Marries Human. And there’s hints and allegations about her and a certain Winston Brother, but mind you, it’s all gossip. And you know how we are in small towns…
Ms. Reid takes a character that has fans swooning before we ever get to know him and that’s a tall order to fill. There’s the whole reality vs expectations issue. Has the fan built Cletus into such a paragon of everything a book boyfriend is supposed to be that the reality of him in his story fall short. I can assure you, Cletus’ Famous Sausages are still some of the most sought after sausages this side of St. Louis. The reality of Cletus far exceeds any expectation I had of him, and I’ve been dying for his story since I read Beauty and the Mustache. I will also say that Jennifer Sylvester is probably my favourite female character of Ms. Reid’s aside from Sienna. (It’s hard to beat Mothra’s Nipples, just sayin’…) So, get this book and swoon over this awkward and clumsy couple. They definitely deserve the swooning.
About Penny Reid
SEX! It all started with sex, between my parents. Personally I don’t like thinking about it, but whatever works for you is a-ok with me. No judgment. The sex happened in California and much of my life also occurred in that state until I moved from the land of nuts (almonds), wine, silicon… boobs, and heavy traffic to the southeast US. Like most writers I like to write, but let’s get back to sex. Eventually I married and gave birth to 2 small people-children (boy-6, girl-4 as of this writing).
By day I’m a biomedical researcher with focus on rare diseases. By night I’m a knitter, sewer, lino block carver, fabric printer, soap maker, and general crafter. By the wee hours of the morning or when I’m intoxicated I love to listen to the voices in my head and let them tell me stories. I hope you enjoy their stories.
