Friends Without Benefits (Knitting in the City Book 2) – Penny Reid

friends wo benefits penny reid

Friends Without Benefits can be read as a standalone, is a full length 120k word novel, and is book #2 in the Knitting in the City Series.
There are three things you need to know about Elizabeth Finney: 1) She suffers from severe sarcastic syndrome, especially when she’s unnerved, 2) No one unnerves her like Nico Manganiello, and 3) She knows how to knit.

Elizabeth Finney is almost always right about everything: the musical merits of boy bands are undervalued by society, “benefits” with human Ken dolls are better without friendship, and the sun has set on her once-in-a-lifetime chance for true love. But when Elizabeth’s plans for benefits without friendship are disarmed by the irritatingly charismatic and chauvinistic Nico Manganiello- her former nemesis- she finds herself struggling to maintain the electric fence around her heart while avoiding electrocution or, worse, falling in love.

Blog Images

Elizabeth didn’t really do relationships. She wanted to, but she just couldn’t bring herself to do it. She was hurt deeply when she was younger, and that turned her from getting too involved. Nico was her childhood boyfriend’s best friend and her greatest antagonist. Only now, he’s grown and he’s devastatingly handsome and he’s in the spotlight as a popular comedian.

Nico is intense. I listened to this on audiobook and there were times I caught myself holding my breath right alongside Elizabeth. She is a high-strung, prank-loving woman who just needs to let her hair down and allow someone else to drive this train. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t feeling Nico for a while. He was too much and didn’t feel genuine. Then we peeled back his layers and bit by bit he wriggled his way into my heart. By the time we get to their past, from his POV, I was full in love with this character, and I wanted to reach into the book and force Elizabeth to read that chapter as well. Because if she had JUST known that from FOREVER ago, her life would have been so radically different.

Words with T.M. Frazier ***Interview***

With the recent release of Preppy: The Life and Death of Samuel Clearwater Part 1 Book 5 of the King Series and the upcoming release of Preppy: The Life and Death of Samuel Clearwater Part 2 Book 6 of the King Series, I asked Ms. Frazier if I could ask her a few questions about her writing and this series in particular.

If you’ve read ANY of the King series, then you know Preppy. You’ve fallen in love with the supremely foul mouthed, bow-tie wearing, sexual deviant that he is. When there’s a character THIS dynamic and filled with such depth, you just know that there’s a story lurking under the surface. And so, because I love Preppy so, #BowTieTillIDie type thing, I had to find out more from the woman who created him.

I hope you enjoy the interview. OH! And if you’ve come looking for spoilers…yeah, move on. She didn’t offer any up. 😛

T.M., thank you for accepting my request for an interview on my blog, Textual Love. As promised, the questions will in no way contain or ask for any sort of spoilers. This might disappoint the readers, but they can deal with it. 😛

I haven’t read all your books (I know! Bad Tracy (with the y)!). I started with King and have made my way through to Preppy: The Life and Death of Samuel Clearwater Book 1. The prior books, The Dark Light of Day, Dark Needs, and All the Rage, seem to be loosely connected to the King Series. Was that intentional from the beginning? Or did they just kind of morph that way?

They kind of morphed that way. It’s hard to let characters and places go that I’ve been with for so long and love with all my heart so I incorporated the other stories I wanted to write into the ‘KING’ world. Which technically is The Dark Light of Day world since I wrote that first.

Did you have the entire King Series plotted out before you started writing King or did the characters scream to you that they needed their own story, too? (This being Bear and Preppy for the readers.)

Yes and no. I always have loose ideas and I didn’t know how the readers would respond to Preppy or Bear’s characters so I never knew if I was going to write their books until I found out but the plots were loosely planned for sure.

Do you have a character that resonated with you the most? Which character was the hardest to write? Is there a character you wished you’d written a little differently?

Reading my books back now is torture and there is a lot of things I would change but at one point you really do just have to say that the book is done and all the changing in the world wouldn’t make a difference. The characters themselves I wouldn’t change at all. I love each and every one of them for different reasons. Preppy has been the most complicated and most fun to write but he’s ALSO the hardest.

What’s your writing process? Are you a pantser or a plotter or some variant in between? Do you have a dedicated writing space and time or ritual? Basically, tell us how you create your magic. Every author has their own method of building their magic, I’m curious about yours.

I’m somewhere in between. Also, I write out of order so I’m a huge mess during the writing process because it usually doesn’t come fully together until the last minute. But I’ve tried other ways and failed so I’ve learned to accept that this is just my process.  While I write I need music and headphones and I need to be alone. I can’t write with a TV on or people in the room.  I get distracted way too easily especially since I have an adorable husband and an even more adorable toddler.

What can we expect to see from you in the future? Are you going to continue to explore this world with the penis painted water tower, or are you do you have something completely different in the works? (Not asking for spoilers, just a curiosity.)

Preppy parts two and three are on the way as well as Smoke’s book (A character from Rage) it will be called Up in Smoke but I don’t know WHEN it will be out. I am also writing a book with another author that we hope to release in 2017 but it’s top secret so we aren’t announcing anything until WHEN and IF it’s done because we are both crazy busy. I have a few other things up my sleeve, but I haven’t planned everything out just yet. I hope to release 5 books in 2017.  ❤

Preppy: The Life and Death of Samuel Clearwater Part 1(The King Series Book 5) – T.M. Frazier

Samuel Clearwater, A.K.A Preppy, likes bowties, pancakes, suspenders, good friends, good times, good drugs, and a good f*ck.

He’s worked his way out from beneath a hellish childhood and is living the life he’s always imagined for himself. When he meets a girl, a junkie on the verge of ending it all, he’s torn between his feelings for her and the crippling fear that she could be the one to end the life he loves.

Andrea ‘Dre’ Capulet is strung out and tired.

Tired of living for her next fix. Tired of doing things that make her stomach turn. Tired of looking in the mirror at the reflection of the person she’s become. Just when she decides to end it all, she meets a man who will change the course of both their lives forever.

And their deaths.

For most people, death is the end of their story.
For Preppy and Dre, death was only the beginning.

This is the fifth book in the King Series and it’s meant to be read after Soulless.

Blog Images

We met Preppy in King. We fell in love with him then, and that never changed through Tyrant, Lawless, or Soulless. I’ll be honest, I’ve been finished with this book for a while. I haven’t written my review yet because every time I sit down to do it, I can’t write what I really want to say without giving anything away. I will say that in order to read this book, read the first four books first. It’s important. Because though MOST of this book occurs before King, how it ends up…is after Soulless. And because you’re going to NEED to read those to truly grasp what’s going on in Preppy. I own this book in print and in audiobook. I don’t have the ebook of it. This review will reflect the audiobook version.

Gah! What to say…Preppy is one of those side characters that I’m not 100% sure was intended to be anything more than an interesting side character, but he resonates with a person. Something about that bowtie wearing, foul-mouth having, pancake eating man, just calls to people. The emotions this character pulls out of the reader is amazing. And this is all BEFORE we get to his story. There is definitely laughter and tears and rage. And in all honesty, I was half afraid of reading/listening to this book. I was afraid that I’d built this larger than life expectation on how this story would go and I’d find this story flat and boring by comparison. I’ve done that a time or two. However, I’m OH SO GLAD that I did finally break down and give it a whirl because Oh my gosh! Those emotions that the character invokes as a side is minor compared to the emotions that you get when you’re wrapped up in his head. And Mr. Lance Greenfield and Ms. Kirsten Leigh do an AMAZING job acting out this story.

Mr. Greenfield and Ms. Leigh didn’t just narrate this story, they breathed life into it and gave the characters a roundness that made these characters feel real. So their heartache was mine, their joy and shame was also mine to share with them. I really think they did an amazing job with this book. So much so, that though I will be buying the rest of Preppy’s stories in paperback, I’ll also be getting the audiobook versions. It’s just that freaking good.

I know my review really isn’t telling much but honestly, I can’t get started because if I did, I’d ruin the whole series for you. The only thing I can say is, if you read King and love Preppy in it, get the rest of the series and read on, because the Preppy you meet in King is a shadow of the man you read in his own story.

Ms. Frazier really has outdone herself with this book. I really enjoyed the rest of this series and I couldn’t imagine that Preppy would be better than I thought it would be, but she completely floored me with this book, it went beyond what I had hoped. So, OH YES, I’d recommend this book, and in doing so, I’m recommending the entire King Series. You’ll need the other four for this to really make sense.

Queen Heir Slays

Hey guys, A here. I was lucky enough to get an ARC for Queen Heir by Jaymin Eve and Leia Stone. Keep reading for my thoughts on the collaboration!

A gripping new fantasy series by USA today bestselling authors Jaymin Eve and Leia Stone.
Arianna is a queen heir and at 20 years old she’s now eligible for the crown of wolf shifters. Heirs are trained and groomed so that they’re ready, should the queen perish during their time of eligibility.
Of course, there’s little chance of that happening. The Red Queen has stood for a century, and her power is beyond reckoning.
Or so Arianna believes, right up until the final tolling of the bells. The queen has fallen. Four heirs will now fight it out for the crown.
Let the summit begin.

This book was SOOOOOOOOOO amazing. The only downside is that I now am slowly dying a thousand deaths while I wait for the next book. It always makes me nervous when a book is written by more than one author, but this book knocked it out of the park. If I didn’t know it was a collaboration, I would never guess that it was. Which in my opinion, is the mark of a great collaboration. They wrote this book together so seamlessly that it reads as one voice when you read it.

I loved the concept of this book, and am so excited for the more fantasy elements that will be mashing with Paranormal even more in the next book. This was my first time reading either of these authors, but now I’m determined to get my hands on all their other work. Once you pick this book up, you won’t be able to put it down. I am gladly giving this book 🌮🌮🌮🌮🌮

Jaymin Eve is the USA Today Bestselling author of Young Adult and New Adult romance novels (both urban fantasy and contemporary). She loves surrounding herself with the best things in life: her two girls, a good book and chocolate.

Living on the beautiful Gold Coast in Australia, the family loves spending lots of time on the beach. And traveling as frequently as possible.

When Jaymin isn’t trying to wrangle two daughters, a puppy and her husband, you will find her hiding in a corner trying desperately to write her stories (without little fingers pressing random keys). She asks for forgiveness if you notice the occasional sskkkkssis appearing in her book, her children are proud of their contribution.

She’d love it if you contacted her, giving feedback or just to have a chat.

Leia Stone is a USA TODAY bestselling author and mother of twins. When she isn’t writing or kiddo wrangling, her nose is shoved in a good book. She lives with her husband and family in Portland, Oregon. She loves Indian food and is a vegetarian.

**The Matefinder series has been optioned for film.*

Amazon UK:

Five years ago, we’d been together and on fire, but the flames burned us both. Now she’s back in my life and is all my wildest fantasies in the flesh.

I want her. The desire is too powerful to argue against, but I’m not interested in what we had. This is an arrangement about pleasure and finding out who we are behind closed doors. There won’t be talk of love or any sweet nothings whispered by either of us.

This time, I’ll control the heat between us and make sure neither of our hearts get too close to the flames.

Kyle is mentioned briefly in prior books. He’s Payton’s brother and he’s a lawyer who just moved back to Chicago from New York. There’s a sort of mystery to him, from those past books, so I wasn’t too entirely sure what I was going to end up with here.

Oh my Gawd! So far out of all of The Blindfold Series books, Three Hard Lessons is HANDS DOWN my favourite. Seriously. Like HOLY COW THAT’S HAWT serious. I’m going to put Three Sweet Nothings up there next to it. Not in the #1 spot, no, but it’s a closer second. This book is deliciously naughty. The chemistry between Kyle and Ruby is electric and instant. They’re old flames, so of course they still a torch for each other…at least in their pants.

We see Dom and Payton, of course, we also see more Noemi and Joseph. Boy do we see more of them, and yeowza! S’all I’m sayin, mmkay? Now let’s get down to the nitty gritty. This book is very well written and it’s very engaging. I read it all in abour 4ish hours. But I read quickly. This book is scorching hot. As in, the scenes in this will melt pig iron. I really wish I could elaborate, but that would be neither decent of me, nor would it be nice because it would give spoilers away.

Ms. Sloane writes some of the best erotica-ish books I’ve read. I’m hard pressed to call them erotica because the sex, though prominent, ISN’T the focal point of the novel. It’s an amazingly fun bonus, but not the point. But if most erotica were written like this…well, let’s just say that the divorce rate would be much smaller. Hard to fight when your…ahem! Anyway! Back to the review… Ms. Sloane writes on heckuva story and if you don’t mind some frisky business…very detailed, explicit, somewhat on the fringe (of typical romance novels because OMG! There’s girl play, and 😉 other stuff…) play, then I BEG you to get into this series. I can PROMISE you that you will NOT regret it. 😀  OH! And for you audiobook lovers out there, she’s recently announced that Book 1 of the series Three Simple Rules will be coming out in audiobook soon. So yeah…get your listening apparatuses charged up, your headphones/earbuds plugged in, and prepare for the audio onslaught that is Logan and Evie. 😀 Don’t listen to this in public. I don’t care how the voice actors are in it. Yeah…it’ll be plum embarrassing…

ANYWAY! T-out!

Royally Screwed (The Royally Series Book 1) – Emma Chase

Nicholas Arthur Frederick Edward Pembrook, Crowned Prince of Wessco, aka “His Royal Hotness,” is wickedly charming, devastatingly handsome, and unabashedly arrogant―hard not to be when people are constantly bowing down to you.

Then, one snowy night in Manhattan, the prince meets a dark haired beauty who doesn’t bow down. Instead, she throws a pie in his face.

Nicholas wants to find out if she tastes as good as her pie, and this heir apparent is used to getting what he wants.

Dating a prince isn’t what waitress Olivia Hammond ever imagined it would be.
There’s a disapproving queen, a wildly inappropriate spare heir, relentless paparazzi, and brutal public scrutiny. While they’ve traded in horse drawn carriages for Rolls Royces and haven’t chopped anyone’s head off lately―the royals are far from accepting of this commoner.

But to Olivia―Nicholas is worth it.

Nicholas grew up with the whole world watching, and now Marriage Watch is in full force. In the end, Nicholas has to decide who he is and, more importantly, who he wants to be: a King… or the man who gets to love Olivia forever.

Blog Images

I’ll be honest. I totally picked up this audiobook because of Shane East’s voice. I saw someone mention it in an audiobook group and thought I’d give it a whirl. I listened to the sample and that man could read a dictionary, coding textbook, or even the phone directory. I.DO.NOT.CARE. Flat, don’t care. I would willingly listen to him talk all freaking day long. But that’s why I bought the book.

Once I started listening to it, the story was really funny and a little sad all at the same time. I really enjoyed the chemistry and the way the two main characters fed off one another and that’s not to mention once you get Henry involved and his constantly calling Olivia “Olive”. I think I gigglesnorted my way through one of the final conversations between Nicholas and Henry, and Mr. East’s reading of it was so amazingly spot on and funny.

Speaking of the voice actors, because that’s what these two are. They didn’t just READ the words…they acted them out for our ears. I had moments where things got so steamy I had to fan my face. And this isn’t from Mr. East reading it, but rather Ms. Arndt. She’s awfully talented at voice acting/narration. Oh holy smokes! And Mr. East, who seems to be fairly new to this, is really freaking awesome as well.  Believe me when I tell you that the sample is just that a sample and not the true showing of how talented this guy is.

Ms. Chase can write an intensely funny book. She has a way of making the character interact that feels organic and they feed off of one another. So you might have your staunch characters and your comedic ones, but they’re in constant flow and they all dance together in something almost magical. I THOROUGHLY enjoyed Royally Screwed. I can’t wait until Henry’s story in Royally Matched. Though I hadn’t read the words of this book, I do definitely recommend the audiobook.

Emma Chase lives in a small, rural town in New Jersey, with her husband, two children and two misbehaving (but adorable) dogs. She has a long standing love/hate relationship with caffeine.

Emma is an avid reader. Before her children were born she was known to consume whole books in a single day. With the 2013 release of her debut romantic comedy, Tangled, the ability to now call herself an author is nothing less than a dream come true
